This presentation gives a working example and experience of a government agency using multiple channels to communicate critical information with the public that impacts daily lives and schedules. Agencies utilise various forms or channels of communication today. However, there is a gap in the understanding of how to efficiently and cost-effectively integrate multiple channels of communication. Chanel considerations include email, text, messaging, RSS, and social media (Twitter®, YouTube®, Facebook®, blogs and widgets).
This presentation addresses the following key question: With the rise of emerging messaging channels, how should a government agency approach strategy, best practices and obstacles of using multiple channels? Is reaching the public through multiple channels a challenge or an opportunity? The presentation includes an in-depth review of Highways Agency’s use of message alerts and widgets to improve communication to its stakeholders, as well as an insight to the controversial use of text messaging.
